About
I bought my first copy of the Odyssey in Kathmandu back in 1995 while on my way into the Himalayas. Two years later I started my Classics training in 1997 when I became interested in learning about mythology and the journey of the hero. In 2000 I started tutoring in Classics at the University of Melbourne and have been teaching since then.
In 2003 I graduated with Masters (First Class) after writing a dissertation on warrior cultures in the Iliad and Kurosawa's Seven Samurai. I then made a shift into Strategic Studies in which I was awarded another Masters (First Class) from the Australian National University. My work received a Letter of Commendation from the Chancellor and was published by the prestigious Strategic and Defence Studies Centre. The following year I worked as a graduate intern with the leading think tank, the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, while continuing to publish work on nuclear diplomacy and South Pacific security. In 2006 I joined the Young Leaders Group in the CSIS Pacific Forum, representing the University of Melbourne at in Second Track WMD non-proliferation talks in San Francisco. In the same year was co-investigator on a UNESCO project on Governance and democracy in the South Pacific. (see attached article)
In 2006 I started my PhD on the Iliad. It began as a thesis about the transformation of the spectacle and the use of the image in war. More than just being about images of war and peace this has become a thesis about the transitions, the spaces and processes between war and peace. Through charting and analysing the interactions that take place between people I am seeking to contribute towards our understanding of how war and peace are created in the Iliad. This does, I believe, offer important lessons for our own world, not just our understanding of the world of Homer.
Alongside teaching and research in Classics, I also have a life coaching practice in which I also bring my Classical training to bear. This has resulted in the publication of my first book, Discover the hero Within, which was translated and published by the major Spanish publisher, Santillana, in 2009.
