About
Since completing my PhD at the Institute of Archaeology London in 1989, my area of research has been the rural economy and particularly farming in Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages. I am currently researching oil and wine press technology, as well as Roman trade in fine pottery, exploring the influence of military, political, economic, trade, and ecological factors in production and trade from the 1st to 7th centuries AD. I am also engaged in an Australian Research Council project researching the Aegean region in Late Antiquity.
I am an Honorary Fellow of the School of Historical Studies at the University of Melbourne, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, London, and work as Subject Leader of History of Ideas in a pre-university Foundation Studies course for international students at Trinity College, the University of Melbourne.
